This past Saturday the W.A.R. Lords kicked off our 2018 season! Students gathered bright and early at both the W.A.R. Lords lab (affectionately dubbed “The Shop”), and Kearny High School. At Kearny, W.A.R. Lords toured a full scale model of the FIRST PowerUp game, picked up the Kit of Parts, and made friends with students on other teams across San Diego. After watching the Twitch Livestream, the whole team came back together to read and dissect the rules. Students read together, helping each other to better understand the game and answering questions.
Eventually, the W.A.R. Lords split off into groups, complete with experienced mentors and veteran students right alongside freshmen to break the game up into components, and prioritize them into our game-winning strategy. These groups then came together to reach a team wide consensus. From this prioritized list, students on the CAD and build teams began brainstorming different mechanisms that will help our team accomplish these tasks. Sunday morning began the process of prototyping, and the shop was abuzz with lathing, CNC and manual milling, and good old fashioned hacksawing. Another group of students also began work on our full-scale field elements, so that prototypes can be tested effectively in game play scenarios.
